2009 Legislative Priorities: Leading Georgia into a Sustainable Future

Accept No Rollbacks

First and foremost, we will defend current laws on the books that protect our natural resources and work to minimize budget cuts for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, especially the Environmental Protection Division (EPD).

For example, companies have proposed to pump chemically treated wastewater or other surface water down into Georgia’s pristine groundwater system.  This proposal, known as aquifer storage and recovery, is a risky scheme that can easily contaminate vital drinking water sources for many Georgians and has not been shown to be consistent and efficient for water storage.  The General Assembly has recognized the risk posed by aquifer storage and recovery and has twice placed a moratorium on the practice.  Unfortunately, the current moratorium is scheduled to sunset in 2009.  To protect Georgia’s drinking water, we will work to make the moratorium permanent.
