 Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday
 

energy star Last legislative session the General Assembly passed House Bill 1219, which provides for a sales tax exemption from both state and local sales taxes for four (4) days, August 3 ? 6, 2006, for covered items and specific energy efficient products. The purchase of energy efficient products with a sales price of $1,500 or less is exempt. The product must meet or exceed EPA and DOE standards for energy efficient products and be purchased for home or personal use.

By using Energy Star products you can cut back on your energy consumption and reduce air pollution. Energy Star qualified products span more than 40 categories including lighting, home electronics, heating and cooling equipment and appliances. Whether you need a new computer or new lightbulbs, help save the planet by purchasing Energy Star products, and save money on sales tax while you?re at it August 3rd through the 6th.

During the sales tax holiday period, a sales tax exemption also applies to purchases of tangible personal property in the following categories:

  • Articles of Clothing.The exemption applies to articles of clothing and footwear with a sales price of $100 or less per item. Clothing accessories such as handbags, umbrellas, cuff links, handkerchiefs, jewelry, key cases, wallets, watches and watch bands, and ponytail holders and/or similar hair products are not exempt.
  • Personal Computers. A single purchase of $1,500 or less of personal computers and/or related accessories is exempt. If the single purchase exceeds $1,500, the entire transaction is taxable.
  • General School Supplies.The exemption applies to the purchase of general school supplies with a sales price of $20 or less per item.


The exemptions are intended for an individual?s personal use. The exemptions exclude items rented, leased, purchased by businesses, or purchased for resale. The exemptions do not apply to items sold at theme parks, entertainment complexes, hotels, restaurants, and airports.

 Primary Run-off August 8th
 

Early voting began on July 31st for the Republican Primary Run-off Election that will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2006. In addition to local runoffs, there are several important statewide runoffs for both Republicans and Democrats.

For Republicans, there is a run-off for Secretary of State between Karen Handel and Bill Stephens. There is also a run-off for Commission of Agriculture between Gary Black and Brian Kemp.

For Democrats, Jim Martin and Greg Hecht are squaring off for a Lt. Governors bid. Secretary of State run-off is between Gail Buckner and Darryl Hicks. There is also a closely-watched run-off between six-term incumbent Cynthia McKinney and challenger Hank Johnson in Congressional District 4.

Any voter who did not vote in the Democratic Primary may vote in the Republican Primary Run-off. It does not matter whether you voted in the Republican Primary or not. Likewise, any voter who did not vote in the Republican Primary may vote in the Democratic Primary Run-off, regardless of whether you voted in the Democratic Primary.

Early voting is ongoing at your county courthouse or government center. The Primary Run-off is Tuesday, August 8th. GCV encourages you make your choice and cast an informed ballot.
