Income Tax Credit for Land Conservation
House Bill 1107
Last week, Representatives Roberts, Golick, V.
Smith, Maddox, L. Smith, and Lewis unveiled House
Bill 1107, known to many of us as the Land
Conservation Tax Credit. This bill provides for a
25% state income tax credit up to $250,000 for
individuals and $500,000 for corporations who place
their land in a permanent conservation easement or a
qualified donation to state, county or municipal
governments, or a charitable nonprofit organization.
This bill, championed by the Governor and
supported by the general environmental community, is
modeled on a land conservation tax credit
implemented in North Carolina in 1983. Since its
implementation, the tax credit has helped North
Carolina permanently conserve almost 140,000 acres
of valuable land at a cost to the state of less than
17% of the outright purchase value.
The bill is on agenda at the Income Tax Subcommittee
meeting on Tuesday, January 31, 2005 at 8:30 A.M. in
Room 133 of the Capitol.
